FAQ

How do I put math symbols in pdf files? In adobe acrobat or reader, theres a tool to put sticky notes onto the text. I can make small notes, and I can add math symbols by copying and pasting them from wikipedia. is there any way I can actually type math symbols instead of copy and paste?
I wrote this Android app to streamline note-taking with LaTeX on the go. Notes can be prettified using Markdown:neutriNote - Android Apps on Google PlayAmong other features: text expansion, PDF output, regular expression search support.
How do you type text on a PDF file using Adobe Reader?
Actually, Adobe Reader has allowed you to type text on it for over 5 years (since Reader X)  via the Commenting tools.  Just choose the Comment tools, and use the TextBox tool to add as much text as you want in whatever font(s), size(s). etc.this works both on the desktop version of Reader as well as the mobile versions.

You can try out Fill which had a free forever plan and requires no download. If a PDF file is not letting me write on the file using the Reader, can I do something to change that?
You wrote "the Reader" - are you using Adobe Reader ? When you wrote "write on the file" - do you mean using the Add Text tool found under Fill & Sign ( Fill & Sign Tools ) ?

Which PDF readers can export highlighted text?
I back with Sumnotes - Summarize PDF Annotations . The interface is super easy to use for someone like me who is not computer geek.As a resident physician, I do lengthy reading. First, I split my pdf into small chapters, then I begin highlighting PDFs using various highlight colors. I use drawboard PDF app on surface laptop to highlight PDF text into various colors. Then I upload my highlighted PDF to sumnotes, I think extracting highlighted text makes it very easy to revise the lengthy text in a short span of time. Extracting highlighted text also gives a sharp memory recall as well. I tried windows app, pdf-highlights-extractor, to extract highlighted text however the extraction was not precise and results were dismal.I then tried sumnotes website and I was blown away. It was able to extract text from PDFs which were not in good quality, such as scanned PDFs. Their online service allow user to extract text based on highlight color which I haven't seen before. I can choose to just extract text with yellow highlights and leave the blue highlights. Pretty cool!! The option to selectively choose which text to extract have been helpful on some occasions.I look forward to acing my boards with this strategy. .

I am an online educator and I create documents for my clients to read and write in (like a digital workbook). Do they need to have Adobe Reader as I created the documents in Adobe Acrobat Pro.
Depends on what specifically you want your students to do in those PDFs and what do you mean by “write”.Annotations (comments). Most PDF reader apps will let them annotate the file (add comments), but while they all support the basic sticky notes, few go beyond. Adobe Reader will give your students lots of drawing annotations, text editing markup, file attachments and more (some of it will require Reader-enabling in Acrobat first), so it still sounds like the best free option. It will also let you add text with Fill & Sign tool and edit it, but neither it nor other free readers will let you edit and format the text and images already in the file. That's a feature of Acrobat Pro and its other paid rivals.Forms. Those created with Acrobat Pro (acroforms) can be filled in most readers, including on mobile. Depending on how the form was created you may need to Reader-enable it in Acrobat so it can be saved or digitally signed. If your PDF looks like a form, but is in fact flat without any fields, e.g. just for printing, you can still use the Fill & Sign tools in Adobe Reader to type over it and place a drawing of a signature.Interactivity. This is tricky. Anything made with Flash or requiring it will only work in Adobe Reader or Acrobat Pro, only on desktop, only with Flash Player installed separately on the destination system. Not a reliable option anymore… Almost anything that requires JavaScript won't work on mobile. There are very few PDF interactivity features that work more or less universally. Of those that immediately come to mind it's probably only video (.mp4, not .flv) and the show/hide field functionality.
